Trading meets tax logic: Where systems collide

On Friday, April 17, 2026, we'll be at INVEST Stuttgart — Germany's largest financial trade fair for private investors. Together with WH SelfInvest and stock3, we'll address a topic relevant to everyone trading through international brokers:

Why the numbers on your broker platform aren't the same numbers that belong on your tax return — and where things break down with ETFs, options, futures, and foreign currencies.

📍 ICS, Room C6.2 — WH SelfInvest | 4:00–4:45 PM

What's it about?

Anyone trading through Interactive Brokers or an introducing broker like WH SelfInvest receives no automatic tax withholding and no annual tax certificate. The tax preparation is entirely the investor's responsibility.

In this talk, Thomas Ortmeier and Dominik Schröter will show where the systems diverge:

  • Broker data ≠ tax data: Timing, classification, and EUR valuation — three dimensions where trading logic and tax law think differently.
  • ETF classification: IBKR only knows "Stock/ETF". German tax law distinguishes InvStG funds (with partial exemptions), ETNs under § 20 EStG, and gold ETCs under § 23 EStG. The correct classification can mean hundreds of euros in difference.
  • Options & short selling: A premium in December, an exercise in January — two separate taxable events in different years. With short sales, the FIFO logic is completely reversed.
  • Futures: Your account fluctuates daily, but only the realization matters for tax purposes.
  • Foreign currency FIFO: USD balances are separate economic assets. A stock purchase in dollars can trigger an FX gain just through the dollar outflow — invisible but taxable.
