Trading meets German tax logic — live and in person

Why trading data alone isn't enough for a German tax return — and where ETF classification, options, and foreign currency FIFO concretely break down.

What's it about?
Anyone trading through Interactive Brokers or an introducing broker like WH SelfInvest knows the problem: no automatic tax withholding, no annual tax certificate, no mapping to Anlage KAP. The tax preparation is entirely up to the investor.
In our talk, Thomas Ortmeier and Dominik Schröter will show where the systems concretely diverge:
- ETF classification: IBKR only knows "ETF". The German tax office distinguishes InvStG funds (partial exemption), ETNs (§ 20 EStG), and gold ETCs (§ 23 EStG). The difference can amount to hundreds of euros.
- Options across year-end: Short put premium in December, exercise in January — two taxable events in two different tax years. IBKR doesn't map this correctly.
- Foreign currency FIFO: USD holdings are separate taxable assets under German law. Buying a stock in dollars can trigger an FX gain just through the dollar outflow.
